This BBC article I came by today has a very misleading title, we will only suspend some of the aid. In a day and age when our personal country finances are on the brink of destruction, why would we pay Egypt money, to help wage a civil war? More importantly when the regime was violently toppled and they started burning churches and homes of Christians why did we not stop then?
Even more importantly is why this administration, and our congress, so readily ignores laws that are already on the books that tell us what do to in situations like this. Section 508 of the Foreign Assistance Act, clearly states “none of the funds appropriated or otherwise made available pursuant to this Act shall be obligated or expended to finance directly any assistance to any country whose duly elected head of government is deposed by a military coup or decree.” I will give you a government citation of this at some point, but it seems the library of congresses website is not completely in tact due to the shut down.
America pays 20 percent of a military budget for a government waging war on its own people, once upon a time it made sense because they had a leader that played by the rules, and some what stabilized the region. Today this is not true.
I beg you all to contact your leaders, and ask them to stop funding other countries until we get our own finances in check. In a country were we can not advance cancer research, visit our own forests or oceans, and world war 2 vets are bared from visiting memorials built for them, why does it make sense to pay other countries to wage war?
