Imagine being 28, ordained a Christian minister, and arrested in your home country at 30, for no other crime than leaving the faith of Islam. This is a reality for Saeed Abedini, who while visiting his home country was ripped from a bus and arrested for apostasy. The punishment for this crime, is death. This man, changed his mind, and may die for it. Weather you are a Christian or atheist surely as a human you support the idea to think freely. That was/is one of the founding principles of America, the free exercise of religion, and the pursuit of happiness. How can our government who helped instill these values in this man stand by while his life hangs in the balance?
There have been a lot of reasons tossed around for why he was arrested, and a few reasons for why he was even there (popular theory is that he was there to build a secular orphanage), but none of this matters, you cannot respect a religion or a country, that makes it a crime to leave the state established religion. This is the fear that America had, and the entire reason the 1st amendment was created.
I am in fact calling for our government to intervene in the persecution of any religious member who is being jailed in other countries for no other reason than their religion. This call grows even strong for American citizens, the government has a duty to protect us, if they cannot do that then there is no reason for it to continue existence. If it was a simple task for the Great and Almighty Obama to track down Osama, surely he can drop an airship in Iran blow up a wall and extract the reverend before the world is any the wiser? We clearly do not have issues violating our allies boarders in pursuit of our own goals (drone strikes in Pakistan and the retrieval of Osama) so why would we have problems doing it do an enemy to save an American.
