Typhoon Haiyan is crushing the Philippines, leaving a wake of destruction with its winds. Communications are currently cut off so it is difficult to know the extent of damage at the moment. I would like to ask people to pray for the people and their safety there.
I would also like to address a related topic. News sensationalism promoting “global warming” or “climate change”. Hurricane Sandy was deemed a “superstorm” implying that it was stronger, badder, or meaner than the average storm, but that is what it was, an average hurricane. It was at a category 3 when it hit Cuba and a category 2 when it finally hit the US. “Speeds as high as 89 mph were recorded when Hurricane Sandy moved through the Garden State, according to data from the National Weather Service.” I have to ask why we added this superstorm prefix to the name of the storm?
Today I opened up Fox News (oh no gasp he reads Fox News!) to see the headline, MONSTER TYPHOON SLAMS PHILIPPINES. While this is the strongest typhoon of the year it was fast moving, and will likely leave less flooding than previous typhoons. NPR’s title was ‘Off The Charts’ Super Typhoon Haiyan Hits Philippines. In their defense this is a record setting typhoon, but Sandy set no records I am aware of. It was not the most costly, most deadly, longest lasting, or strongest hurricane recorded.
If any one deserves to complain it is the people of the Philippines not the pansies who were displaced by Sandy.
